The New Spirituality

By Gordon Lynch
Much attention has been given in recent writings about religion to fundamentalism and the 'religious right'. But much less attention has been given to their opposite - the emergence of a new generation of progressive religious thinkers and organisations on the 'religious left'. The New Spirituality is one of the first books to give a comprehensive and authoritative account of this burgeoning progressive religious movement. It offers a clear and engaging analysis of the cultural roots, key ideas and organisational structures of this new faith, assessing its significance in the changing moral and religious landscape of contemporary western society. Gordon Lynch argues that we are witnessing the rise of a new religious ideology which reveres the natural world, connects religious faith with novel scientific theories, and has a forward-looking agenda for society's transformation. Produced by one of Britain's leading writers on the changing patterns of modern religion, The New Spirituality will be essential reading for students attempting to understand the shape of religious belief in the twenty-first century.

Madeleine McCann: Haunting Evidence

British police have released a new photofit of the missing child Maddie McCann :
Three American clairvoyants from hit US show 'Haunting Evidence' travelled to the Algarve, in January 2008, in an attempt to find Madeleine. The trio use their "powers" to visit the scenes of crimes and speak to people "from beyond the grave".

Gerry and Kate McCann decided not to take up an offer to co-operate with the show - which has been described as a 'sick TV stunt'.
The programme was first screened in the US in October 2008.

Edgar Cayce predictions

Edgar Cayce is a very famous psychic who had predictions and prophecies about 2012, the pole shift (polar shift) and many other pieces of information about the Earth Changes that are coming with the date of December 21, 2012. He did not speak specifically about 2012, but rather his predictions were supposedly going to happen by the year 1998. His predictions were off and he had the timeline incorrect.
That is the trouble with predictions, it is hard to nail down the time at which they will happen specifically. That is the hardest part about prophecy: nailing down the timeline. Edgar Cayce's predictions are still thought to have much weight and probability. It is just that the timeline is off in his predictions. He suggested all these things would happen sooner than they are appearing in physical reality. They still might appear but at a later time. In fact, Cayce suggested that it would take generations for some of these things to come to pass. Shifting planets could take a long time to finish the process of rearranging themselves. Maybe that's where the 1000 years of peace on Earth come in, at least as far as the humans are concerned.

Science and Spiritualism

The intention of this article is to highlight some points in history when the paths of science and Spiritualism have crossed. I thought it would be interesting to look back at events which are recorded in history to see if there is anything to learn from them.

Having experienced cynical sceptics who would have me believe that science was the truth and Spiritualism was firmly in the realms of fantasy, I had remained a faithful Spiritualist purely on the strength of the wonderful, and hard to ignore, evidence given by Spiritualist mediums.
Ask a sceptic and they might tell you that the anecdotal evidence of mediumship is not enough to provide proof that spirits exist. To be fair it is not a mediums job to prove anything to the sceptics. But hey, I'm not a medium.

Susan Boyle says she's been visited by her mother Bridget's ghost

A CHART-topping singer says she's been visited by the ghost of her dead mother. Susan Boyle, 50, was left bereft when Bridget Boyle died in 2007 at the age of 91.
The pair shared the same home in Blackburn, West Lothian, in Scotland, for all of Boyle's life
And it's there she claims her mother appeared to her.
"The council house is my mother's house. Her energy is still there," Boyle told The Sun.
"I've actually seen my mother in the house. I think she was letting me know she was all right.
"There was a lovely smell. Perhaps it was her perfume, I'm not sure.
"I used to think she'd abandoned me when she died. Maybe she was telling me she hadn't."
The record-breaking songbird, who shot to fame on Britain's Got Talent two years ago, has also revealed how she feels plagued by feelings of isolation.
"My biggest problem is I feel lonely, especially at night," she continued.
"I always had a fear of being alone and now I am.

What Spiritualists Face : James Van Praague

A piece in the once respected Huffington Post (the on-line newspaper sold by  Arianna Huffington for over 100 million dollars without her informing the dozens of writers and contributors who had worked gratis for the publication.) shows the type of gratuitous attacks anyone involved in the paranormal can come under.

Now it carries a Weird News section, not to dissimilar to tens of thousands of other websites but this piece caught our eye. Magician James Randi who has made a  living out of  attacking anything outside his realm and Spiritualism comes in for a bashing from the man as well. The new Huffington Post is stumbling and perhaps this one reason.

Randi operates the so-called :  The James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) describing itself as : a non-profit organization dedicated to providing reliable information about paranormal claims, and helping members of the public protect themselves against 'psychic' and pseudo-scientific scams"

It may not be 'for profit' but it's a great channel for promoting James Randi who offers a $1M prize for anyone who can prove various matters. The Spiritualist lawyer Victor Zammit offers a similar prize for anything who can disprove things paranormal yet Randi has never applied for it.

The article is the usual series of false claims with a demand that Praague disprove the lies (something we at Enmore are used to over the past 2 years). One myth it perpetuates is that Barbara Walters called Praague a 'fake' because he said to her in a private moment off-screen that she had 'blood problems' Walters had a complete health check-up and then went on The View and against all journalistic principles called James on the health claim. 6 Months later she was rushed to hospital for an emergency heart operation.

Here's the late Don Lane getting fed up with Randi and tossing him off his show:

Psychic Sally Morgan under attack again

The British platform medium Sally Morgan, sometimes referred to as 'Princess Diana's psychic' is under attack again in the Daily Mail newspaper.

It was claimed earlier that some people at one of Sally's platform readings reputedly heard someone relaying information to her from outside the hall. She has vigorously denied the claim.

You can access the Daily Mail report here.

The History of Spiritualism by Arthur Conan Doyle

In 1921 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the author of the famous Sherlock Holmes books , toured Australia giving talks on Spiritualism of which he was a devotee.

He gave his farewell speech at the Enmore Spiritualist Church after attending a service there.

The Gutenberg Project has a free e-book by Sir Arthur :
The History of Spiritualism Vol II (1926)
which can be downloaded for free here:

http://gutenberg.net.au/ebooks03/0301061.txt
"THE CAREER OF EUSAPIA PALLADINO The mediumship of Eusapia Palladino marks an important stage in the history of psychical research, because she was the first medium for physical phenomena to be examined by a large number of eminent men of science. The chief manifestations that occurred with her were the movement of objects without contact, the levitation of a table and other objects, the levitation of the medium, the appearance of materialized hands and faces, lights, and the playing of musical instruments without human contact. All these phenomena took place, as we have seen, at a much earlier date with the medium D. D. Home, but when Sir William Crookes invited his scientific brethren to come and examine them they declined. Now for the first time these strange facts were the subject of prolonged investigation by men of European reputation. Needless to say, these experimenters were at first sceptical in the highest degree, and so-called "tests" (those often silly precautions which may defeat the very object aimed at) were the order of the day. No medium in the whole world has been more rigidly tested than this one, and since she was able to convince the vast majority of her sitters, it is clear that her mediumship was of no ordinary type. It is little use pointing out that no psychic researcher should be admitted to the seance room without at least some elementary knowledge of the complexities of mediumship and the right conditions for its unfoldment, or without, for instance, an understanding of the basic truth that it is not the medium alone, but the sitters equally, who are factors in the success of the experiment. Not one scientific man in a thousand recognizes this, and the fact that Eusapia triumphed in spite of such a tremendous handicap is an eloquent tribute to her powers."
